Embark on a journey of learning and skill development with our TAFE courses designed specifically for international students. Experience a blend of practical and theoretical education that sets the foundation for a successful career. Active Study helps you navigate the TAFE system and choose the right course for your goals.

TAFE (Technical and Further Education) institutions offer courses across hundreds of industry areas - from trades, hospitality, and healthcare to IT, business, design, and engineering. Every TAFE qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), ensuring your credential is valued by employers across the country.

TAFE courses are highly practical - combining classroom learning, laboratory or workshop sessions, and workplace-based training. Teachers and trainers are typically industry professionals, so your learning reflects current workplace standards and expectations.

Programs range from Certificate II through to Advanced Diploma level, and many TAFE courses provide credit toward university degrees at partnering institutions.

Cost and duration of TAFE courses in Australia

Fees & Timeline

Cost, Duration & Intake Dates

TAFE (Technical and Further Education) is a network rather than a single course, so duration and cost depend on the qualification you choose. As the course entry notes, programs range from Certificate II through to Advanced Diploma level - a certificate can take from around 6 to 12 months, a diploma roughly 1 to 2 years, and an advanced diploma around 2 years of full-time study. As a broad indication, vocational TAFE qualifications commonly fall in the range of roughly AUD 8,000 to AUD 22,000 in total, with higher AQF levels generally costing more; exact fees vary by course, institution and state.

TAFE institutions typically offer several intakes a year - often around February, April or May, July and October - giving you flexibility to align your enrolment with your visa timeline. Many TAFE courses are highly practical and include workshop or workplace-based training, which can affect scheduling.

These figures are indicative and change over time. Active Study helps you navigate the TAFE system, confirms the current fees and intake dates for the specific course and institution you are considering, and helps you enrol in the program that fits your goals.

Permanent residency pathway after a TAFE course in Australia

Study to PR

Your PR Pathway After This Course

As the course entry notes, many TAFE qualifications align with occupations on Australia's skilled occupation lists, making them a recognised entry point to skilled migration. Because TAFE spans so many fields, the right pathway depends entirely on the specific course and occupation you choose - some align with nationally listed occupations, while others are supported through state and territory nomination.

After completing a relevant TAFE qualification, eligible graduates can often apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to gain Australian work experience, then pursue a skills assessment in their occupation. Depending on whether the occupation is nationally listed or state-supported, you may be eligible to be considered for skilled visas such as the subclass 189, 190 (state nominated) or 491 (regional), subject to your points, a successful skills assessment and current requirements.

Occupation lists, points thresholds and assessment rules change over time, so no outcome is guaranteed. Active Study will identify which TAFE course and institution best support your PR goals, and our MARA-registered migration agents will map the visa pathway that fits your circumstances.
