Dental assisting is offered at AQF Certificate III or Certificate IV level. A Certificate III generally takes around 6 to 12 months of full-time study, while a Certificate IV usually runs for about 12 months, and both include practical placement in dental practices. Indicative tuition for these vocational qualifications commonly sits in the range of about AUD 8,000 to 18,000 in total, although fees vary by provider and the city you study in.
Providers typically run several intakes a year, with common start dates around February, April or May, July, and October. As tuition, placement structures and exact start dates differ between training organisations, the figures above should be treated as indicative only. Once you hold a Certificate III or IV in Dental Assisting, the typical route is to gain Australian clinical experience and, where eligible, apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to keep working while you plan your next step in the oral health sector.
