Painting and decorating courses cover surface preparation, application methods (brush, roller, spray), colour mixing, wallpapering, texture coating, and protective coatings. You will study relevant Australian standards and codes, environmental compliance, and safe handling of paints and chemicals.
Practical training on residential and commercial sites is a key component - you will develop the precision and efficiency expected by Australian contractors, and learn to quote, plan, and complete painting jobs to a professional standard.
The standard qualification is a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating - the national trade qualification required by Australian state licensing authorities.
Qualified painters and decorators work across residential renovations, new construction, commercial fit-outs, and industrial facilities throughout Australia.

Painting and decorating leads to a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, a nationally recognised AQF Level 3 trade qualification required by Australian state licensing authorities. Most providers deliver it over roughly 6 to 12 months of full-time study, structured around practical training on residential and commercial work.
Indicative tuition for international students commonly sits in the AUD 8,000 to 18,000 range for the full qualification, though this varies by provider and location. Several intakes are usually offered each year, often around February, April or May, July and October, giving you flexibility on your start date.
These figures are indicative and change over time. Active Study helps you find a registered training organisation that provides quality painting and decorating training, then confirms the exact current fees, material costs and intake dates before you enrol.
After completing your Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, the typical journey is to gain Australian on-site experience, applying where eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) so you can keep working in the trade while you build the evidence skilled migration requires.
As the course explains, painting trades are listed on state and territory skilled occupation lists rather than a single national list, so the realistic pathway is state nomination through a subclass 190 permanent visa or a subclass 491 regional provisional visa.
