Trade study covers a broad range of disciplines - including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, bricklaying, tiling, automotive and metal fabrication - so the specifics depend on the trade you choose. As the course entry notes, the standard entry qualification is a Certificate III, which is recognised by state licensing authorities as the minimum requirement to work as a tradesperson, and a Certificate III commonly takes around 6 to 12 months full-time, with some trades extending further. As an indication only, trade certificate courses generally fall in the range of roughly AUD 8,000 to AUD 18,000 in total, varying with the trade, provider and campus location.
Trade courses are delivered by registered training organisations and most offer several intakes a year - often around February, April or May, July and October. Because trades are practical by design, your program will combine classroom theory with workshop training and workplace experience, which can influence the overall timeline.
These figures are indicative and change over time. Active Study confirms the current published fees and intake dates for your chosen trade and provider, and helps you enrol in the qualification that aligns with both your interests and your migration goals.
Australia's trades sector has some of the most consistent skill shortages, and as the course entry notes, many trade occupations are listed on both the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and on state occupation lists. That dual listing is what makes trade courses among the more reliable study-to-PR pathways - but the exact route depends on the specific trade you qualify in.
After completing your Certificate III, eligible graduates can often apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to gain Australian work experience, then pursue a trade skills assessment in their occupation. Where the trade is on the MLTSSL you may be eligible to be considered for the subclass 189, 190 or 491, and where it is supported at the state level the pathway is generally framed around the subclass 190 (state nominated) or 491 (regional), subject to your points, a successful skills assessment and current requirements.
Occupation lists, points thresholds and assessment rules change over time, so eligibility is never guaranteed.
